Metamorphosis

All of them smart people --
They congregated near the lime-tree bough
All of them fools
They met in the water, and there they drowned.
And the smart folks
They turned into trees,
Then into houses with chimneys
And the fools all turned into shells --
Small, curvy, glittering little things.
